The rain came and as the possibility of a postponement drew ever closer we hung fire on the teas and instead listened to the music blasting out of the pa, from Reverend and the Makers to the Human League, they played the full ABC of Sheffield Music…
The pitch “had the look, the look of…” a swimming pool but none the less the game kicked off and Staveley belied the inclement conditions by trying, with some success to play their trademark passing game.
Just before halftime Captain Jamie Smith showed us, once again that no one Moves like Jammer - mer mer mer moves like Jammer etc etc etc by hitting an unstoppable 25 yard screamer past former Welfare ’keeper Rob Poulter into the Sheffield net.

Half time
Sheffield 0 v 1 SMWFC.
Sheffield eventually beat ‘keeper Martin Dewberry, who had earlier thwarted the home sides attempts on goal with some good saves and made it 1-1 On 59 minutes.
There was a bit of respite in the weather and allied to their equaliser this seemed to galvanise Sheffield into action and they created some decent half chances. The Welfare defence continued where it had left off in the last game (v Glossop) though and defended soundly.
As the rain turned to snow fortunes turned back in our favour and Matt Thorpe danced his way into the Sheffield box, wrong footed Poulter and made it…..
Sheffield 1 v 2 SMWFC
Considering the conditions, and the way the team still tried to play football this, for me was fast becoming the performance of the season so far and, it was no surprise when Josh Scully extended the lead and deservedly confirmed our place in round 4.
Full Time
Sheffield 1 v 3 Staveley Miners Welfare
Credit the officials too for allowing the game to go the distance and reffing it accordingly.
My Man of the match….All of them!
Weather permitting we’ve got a trip up the M1 to third placed....
Brighouse Town Saturday 23rd November - kick off 3pm
Since beating us at the end of August at Inkersall Road they have lost only twice in the league - a run of 13 games and 11 wins. They also have 6 games in hand of leaders Tadcaster Albion which if they were to win them would put them 10 points clear of the Brewers.
In Tom Matthews and Ryan Hall they have two of the leagues most prolific goal scorers, a combined 36. Hall having scored four of his goals against us.
It’ll be a hard game but if we continue the recent form and the never say die attitude from the last few games then why not?…..
Up the Welfare!
