V Sheffield 20/11/2013

The first line from Glossop North Ends version of the match reads…Staveley scored early and late on to end the dreams of a Wembley return. The Hillmen had a lot of possession but failed to add the necessary quality to create a hatful of chances or convert the ones they did create.

I think that’s a fair reflection of the game, they had a few really good chances some of which looked harder to miss but our entire team defended very well, blocking half chances here there and everywhere and debut boy Xavier Parisi kept goal well…

I’ll just add that I firmly believe that shot from Josh Scully which looped over North Ends keeper and into the net was exactly what he meant to do….

(right here would be a good place to stick the video of the goal but for some reason it wont let me, Its on the clubs facebook page though so have a look click "Like" and join in the fun)

Staveley Miners Welfare 2 - 0 Glossop North End

Next up is the seemingly annual encounter with the worlds oldest football club...

Sheffield FC - 20 / 11 / 2013 Kick off 7:45pm...

...in the worlds fourth oldest cup competition (still in existence), the Sheffield Senior Cup.

The Sheffield Challenge Cup as it was known “back in the day” began life in the 1876 / 77 season, and was for teams in the Sheffield area.

Club have won the competition on 5 occasions but perhaps can lay claim to another, in the early days they didn’t even enter the competition but, their players did, under the name of Thursday Wanderers, twice and won the competition in 1879.

Interestingly Thomas Sorby made his only England appearance whilst registered as a Wanderers player. We beat Wales 2-1 and he scored in a match played in blizzard conditions and as a result for only 30 minutes a half.

The year after a small town from North east Derbyshire won the cup (can you guess who they were?)

R.G. Barlow, T.Kenyon, W.Young, J.T.Till, D.James**, G.B. Marples,  H.P Marples, S.Doughty**,  E.Widdowson,  J.Hay and W.Wallace took to the field in the final for Staveley on March 19th 1880 and promptly battered the much more fancied Heeley from start to finish.

Heres an extract from the Sheffield and Rotherham independent of the time

“Heeley were not in the hunt from beginning to end; the Staveley party, playing with wonderful resolution and skill, beat them at all points and were ultimately proclaimed the victors…3-1”

“There has never been such an upsetting of general calculation in the history of the challenge Cup and we should judge that there are many empty purses in Heeley today” (even then there was no such thing as a poor bookmaker)

Sadly I believe the trophy has since been melted down for its silver value…I'm doing a shakey head movement as I write this.

**I’d need a blue police box to prove this categorically but its more than likely that these two are my Great Great Uncles.  Stephen Doughty even has a wikipedia page

Wednesdays encounter, will by no means be an easy game with Sheffield being an established Evostick team but we’re in good form and we’re long overdue a win over them.

Up the Welfare!
