A number of changes were made to the starting line-up
following the disappointing performance and ultimately result in the last game.
In came debutants Levi Walker at right back, Adam Wisdom up front and Simon
Hore a new signing from Arnold Town at centre back replacing Kyle Clark who
dropped to the bench and the injured Kurtis Morley and Ross Goodwin
respectively.
Armthorpe Welfare got the game underway, but it was
Staveley who were eager to right the wrongs of that FA Cup exit pressed from
the off causing panic in the away defence, with Adam Scott causing Leigh
Overton in goal for Armthorpe to kick into touch in the first 10 seconds of the
game.
Just two minutes had passed when Adam Wisdom used his strength,
challenging first Armthorpes central defender Josh Gibbons and then midfielder
Craig Aspinall to win a high ball up field from Staveley goal keeper Chris Butt
and knocked it to Ellis Wall, he shifted it forward to Jamie Brown on the edge
of the area, Brown wriggled free of the attentions of Steven Garner and left Aspinall
sat on the floor allowing Adam Scott to release Ellis Wall who had lost his
marker with a clever run round the back of Scott to run into the box and from
the right hand side he unleashed a shot which required the intervention of
Leigh Overton who flicked it onto the cross bar and over for a corner…one which
eluded everyone in the box and out for a goal kick.
The visitors attacked sporadically but without any real
penetration or any conviction thanks mainly to the impressive Simon Hore and
his partner in central defence Alex Pugh, their main threat was in the air and
eventually after a few probing sorties, attacking the clown end a neat spin and
cross from Stuart Preston out on the left was juggled away by Chris Butt under
pressure from Tom Mclaughlin, who looked to have fouled Staveleys ‘keeper but
it wasn’t given and James Leggit cleared.
Leggit had a hand in Staveleys next attack with eleven
minutes gone he received a pass from Steve Carty, advanced forward and dinked a
left footed pass onto the chest of Kieran Watson who with his back to goal
turned on the edge of the area and shot Staveley into the lead.
SMWFC 1 – 0 Armthorpe Welfare.
Not content with one Staveley once again pressed from the
restart winning the ball back with Jamie Brown and Adam Wisdom causing
Armthorpe to clear their lines, a header from Alex Pugh and three quick passes
from Ellis Wall, James Leggit and Kieran Watson almost created a shooting
chance for Wall but a toe in from Armthorpes James Walker denied the midfield
man a shooting opportunity.
The work rate from everyone including the forwards and
wingers was evident and Armthorpe didn’t really have an answer for it even at
this early stage and there was just no way past the wall of blue and white in
front of them.
James Legitt leaped off the front post and cleared a rare
Armthorpe corner and within just a few seconds Staveley had gone close again,
this time Adam Scott reacted quickest to a poor pass from Craig Aspinall to cut
inside from the left and with no challenge from the defence he waltzed across
the box but once again Leigh Overton tipped his goal bound effort onto the bar
and over, Simon Hore heading the resultant corner onto the top of the net.
With 21 minutes on the clock a robust challenge on Adam
Scott from Armthorpes Michael Bunn resulted in a freekick which Scott took
after picking himself up lofting a high curling ball into the far post which
Simon Hore was able to side foot across goal to the waiting Kieran Watson who
slid in at the opposite post to stab home.
SMWFC 2 – 0 Armthorpe Welfare.
Without meaning to be disrespectful to Armthorpe,
Staveley already after only 21 minutes had the game wrapped up but the two goal
hero Kieran Watson was to give the visitors hope when he kicked out at Michael
Bunn following another robust challenge and was correctly given his choice of
the showers by referee Mark Jones.
After a desperate bit of defending from Alex Pugh, Levi
Walker, Ellis Wall, Simon Hore and probably a few more resulted in a half
chance for Armthorpes Stuart Preston who shaped a curling shot into the players
tunnel, ten man Staveley went on the attack again and Jamie Brown closed down a
clearance and wriggled his was through to cut the ball back to Adam Wisdom who,
at the second attempt put the Trojans into a 3-0 half time lead.
HT SMWFC 3 – 0 Armthorpe.
With ten men Staveleys game plan for the second half, was
always going to be about controlling the game, possession and protecting what
they already had and continuing with the high tempo pressing, chasing and
harrying from the first half that’s exactly what they did, at times looking
like they were the team with the man advantage
One or two half chances fell to Mohammed Tijani who had
come on for Adam Wisdom, and whose pace Armthorpe had no answer for. Leigh
Overton came out to smother the ball after TJ had run past three tiring
defenders and he just wasn’t tall enough to get a toe on the end of an Adam
Scott centre which flashed across the box..
Chris Butt pulled off one or two saves including a
brilliant one handed tip over from a Stuart Preston header, but Staveley never
looked like surrendering the lead and claimed a valuable three points.
