Staveley Miners Welfare made the short trip to face
Handsworth Parramore on Victory in Japan day
and pre-match one or two of the Staveley fans were taking in the
commemorations showing on the TV in the bar which featured a band playing
“Abide With Me”. Which was appropriate because this game was also the first
step on the road to Wembley in the Fa Cup where the same hymn will be played
come the final in May.
It’s fair to say that neither side will be in that final
but nonetheless a run in the cup can do wonders for clubs at this level no
matter how far you get, but you do need a bit of luck along the way, especially
with the draw which, again it’s fair to say had not been kind to Staveley, as
Parramore have recruited an expensive squad with higher league experience and
want promotion.
After the impeccably observed minutes silence for Brian
and Judith Bradley two legends of the non league scene in these parts and
friends of Staveley who tragically passed away in the summer Handsworth
Parramore took the lead almost straight away when a right wing Simon Harrison
cross was tapped home by John Froggatt.
Handsworth nearly added to that tally in the 8th
minute but a brilliant right handed flick save from Chris Butt in goal for
Staveley kept the score down.
Staveleys first chance fell to Kieran Watson who, once
he’d collected Kurtis Morelys flick on from a Steve Carty pass, steered a low
curling shot wide after cutting inside from the left and after twenty minutes
Kurtis Morley again found Kieran Watson but he turned provider this time,
crossing the halfway line and running at the defence he passed to Adam Scott
who fired his shot over the bar.
Five minutes later James Leggitt was the victim of an
alleged elbow off the ball, unseen by the referee and the nearby onlookers
which caused a significant amount of bleeding and would eventually end his
afternoon.
Whilst Leggit was receiving treatment off the field Jamie
Brown danced his way through and Staveley forced a corner following a deflected
shot from Adam Scott who, from that corner collected the ball from Parramore
‘keeper David Ratcliffes punch out and wrapped his right foot around the ball
to send it curling towards the low far right hand corner net but saw it ping
off the upright.
For all those chances however Parramore looked more than
comfortable throughout and Chris Butt was called on again when he collected a
rocket from Danny Booth but it didn’t take long form them to extended their
lead as Colin Marrison rose at the far post to head home a left wing cross.
Two became three just before halftime when John Froggatt
scored following a delightful drag back turn on the edge of the box.
Ht HPFC 3 – 0 SMWFC.
It was now clear which team would be in the hat for the
next round but that didn’t stop Staveley trying to play their brand of football
and just after the restart Ryan Watters used Adam Scotts decoy run to great
effect cutting inside from the right running into the space created by Scott
dragging a defender with him, Watters did eventually use Scott and his
dangerous looking cross was deflected out for a corner which unfortunately was
easily cleared by the defence.
Watters, Scott and Jamie Brown were the players most likely
to salvage something out of the game for Staveley but the closest they came was
Adam Scotts deflected shot that David Ratcliffe caught on the line and
Parramore were far from done themselves…
John Froggatt completed his hattrick on 59 minutes with
an acrobatic volley from a corner and got his fourth goal by heading in a
corner on 67 minutes.
Ellis Wall and Mohammed Tijani replaced Kurtis Morley and
Ryan Watters but the game was well and truly dead as far as Staveley were
concerned and their misery was harshly compounded in the 87th minute
when substitute Alex Rippon added his team 6th and final goal.
