They caused problems all night and Laurence Matthewson had to produce some good saves the crossbar also came to our rescue.
Michael Trench opened the scoring on 73 minutes curling in a left footed free kick, and Jordan Turner settled the nerves with a low driven shot past the Nostell keeper on 75 minutes after jinking his way past a couple of defenders.
Goal scorers get the headlines but for me the man of the match was Captain Jamie Smith, putting in just the performance you need when things are not going quite the way you expect, busy, as ever in midfield and was unlucky not to get himself on the score sheet.
Staveley Miners Welfare 2 - 0 Nostell Miners Welfare.
The game wasn’t a great advert for football but - job done, three points and onwards to….
Armthorpe Welfare - Saturday 29th September - Away.
One of the longest serving teams in the Premier division the current Armthorpe Welfare began life in 1976 competing in the Doncaster Senior League, winning it in 1979.
The most successful period for Armthorpe was back in the day when you could buy a pint for 67p, Bob Paisleys Liverpool were winning everything in sight and I was only 1 year old! …The 82/83 season when they won no less than four trophies.
Armthorpe is quite a footballing hotbed, Peter Swan former Sheffield Wednesday and England defender, moved to the town at a young age.
Former Newcastle and Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan was born here.
Whilst Clint Marcelle, Stacy Caldicott and Leo Fortune-West have all played for Armthorpe Welfare, the latter having managed the team until late last season.
So far….
The Welfare (far too many teams have that as their nickname don’t you think?) sit in 16th place 2 points in front of us but having played two games more.
Just over half of their games have involved at least a three goal swing (either way) and interestingly they are yet to draw this season.
Previously at…”the Welfare Ground”
Won 2 drawn 2 lost 1 is the league record, including a 1-5 demolition in 1999. Last seasons meeting marked (I believe) the first point under Neil Cluxtons management equalising twice through Lewis Jackson and Ryan Damms and then again from Jamie Smith in the dying seconds of a pulsating 3-3 draw and perhaps, we deserved all three points. Someone did celebrate a win however and brought back a nice bottle of wine to Staveley courtesy of the half time raffle!
Judging by the conversations around Inky Road on Wednesday, a lot of us are travelling the 30 and a bit miles on Saturday, look forward to seeing you there and lets hope we bring back more than 1 point and some blossom hill this time!
Up the Welfare!
