First Team: Pre-season Preview Part One

Although there's been the Champions League / Fa Cup finals and an enjoyable Women's World Cup, it’s great to finally have some “live” football to go and watch  and that comes in the shape of Pre-season 2015/2016…

Preparation for the new season begins on Saturday 11th July (3pm) when recently appointed manager Brett Marshall takes his Staveley Miners Welfare side to Eagle Valley home of Arnold Town

“The Eagles” were formed in 1989 and currently play in the East Midlands Counties but were as recently as 2012 / 2013 in the NCEPL. Our last visit to Arnold was a pulsating nine goal thriller on the 20th October 2012 where Staveley had to come from behind twice before three goals in 9 devastating minutes made the points safe by winning 3-6.

Next up is the annual trip to Langwith Road on Wednesday July 15th (7:45pm) where Shirebrook Town are the opponents.

“Town” play in the NCEL Division 1 and as always will be there or there abouts come the end of the season and as such will provide a tough early workout. Last seasons friendly encounter ended 1-1 and Shirebrook have already started their preparations beating Ollerton Town 2-1.

The first home game is against the side that ended our Fa Cup dream last season and will provide arguably the biggest test of pre-season.

...Mickleover Sports on 18th July (3pm), who resigned after a 44 year stint playing in the Derby and District league after joining the Central Midlands league in 1993 they have pretty much gone from strength to strength culminating in an exceptional season last year. When they gained promotion to the Evostick Premier League as champions of the Evostick South Division finishing just the nine points clear!!

“The Vikings” or Goole AFC if you prefer, invade Inkersall Road on Wednesday 22nd (7:45pm).

A relatively new club having formed in 1997, a year after Goole town ceased to exist and like Mickleover they've enjoyed a meteoric rise to their current status as an Evostick South club .

Previous visits to Inkersall road include a year 2000 league encounter with Goole rampaging (and other such Viking references) all over a struggling Staveley side securing a 0-2 win.

However that defeat was avenged in an Fa Cup preliminary round replay tie in 2011 where Staveley went through 3-1.

More preseason games to be added...stay tuned!
