The ladies welcomed, Sheffield Wednesday “Reserves” to a
sunny Inkersall road on Sunday 10th April. The Owls, who had up
until Christmas only played one game have now caught up with the rest of the
division and in still being 100% for the season inevitably hit the top spot
last weekend with a 1-3 win over Dinnington Town, so given that record it was
always going to be a tough afternoon for Staveley.
Wednesday started out like they meant business and nearly
took the lead immediately when a through ball from midfield was sent looping
goalwards by the striker but she could only land the ball on the top of the
Staveley net.
As you would perhaps expect given the strength of the
opposition Staveley struggled to get out of defence but stayed solid compact
and tried to frustrate their opponents.
After ten minutes the visitors seemed to run out of ideas
and Staveley came into the game a bit more with Carly Rowlands trying to send
Sasha Lowe through on goal but the alert Wednesday goalkeeper came out to
collect.
Georgia Lowe found Ele Johnson on the edge of the area and
her pass sat up nicely for Johnson to send a looping volley goal wards which
bounced in front of a hesitant goalkeeper who should’ve really been able to
catch the effort but instead was mightily relieved to see it bounce over the
crossbar and onto the netting.
Staveley survived a three on one break when some woeful
finishing saw the ball bounce around the “kop” stand but after Karla Burton and
Carly Rowlands to set up a Sasha Lowe strike on goal which was well saved… The
Owls finally found their shooting boots and hit Staveley on the break, slotting
the ball between the sticks after half an hour.

Staveley tried to get back on level terms early in the
second half with Sasha Lowe trying her best to help Carly Rowlands and her
cross was just cut out before reaching her strike partner, but it was defender
Carly Charlesworth who came closest to restoring parity in the 53rd
minute, but she couldn’t quite get her left peg to a Karla Burton corner and
unfortunately the Owls broke and the through ball they had been trying all day
finally paid off.

Unfortunately that was that as far as the fightback went and
even though they kept going to the end a tiring Staveley side that had probably
put everything they had into the first half just couldn’t keep up with their
opponents which lead to the final score line of…

Which flattered the away side somewhat.
