The Staveley Miners Welfare Ladies took to the field in
their second game of the season on Sunday at Inkersall road in glorious sunshine
which, was welcome to watch in but perhaps made playing more difficult than the
players would’ve liked.
Top of the table Sheffield Rangers were the visitors and
with both sides having won their first game of the season this was already the
proverbial six pointer and was surely the “game of the day” in division 1...
....Staveley started well enough and had the early possession
resulting in a chance after ten minutes when Carly Rowlands shot wide after receiving
a pass from Anya Taylor. Rangers got back into the game however and after a
shot which sailed over the bar they took the lead on 25 minutes when Kirsty
Bradley got hold of the ball on the edge of the area, turned and fired her shot
into the bottom left corner of the Staveley net.
It was 0-2 just after half time when a corner was turned in
at the far post, but with half an hour to go Lauren Hardy burst through the Rangers
defence and gave Staveley a chance by slotting the ball into the left corner with the ‘keeper rooted to the spot. 1-2
Lauren Hardy, making it 1-2
Staveley then set about trying to get back on level terms
and great work from Sam Kirk down the left forced a corner which Leanne Millington
took short to Laura Poole who returned the favour to Millington who was wrongly
adjudged to be in an offside position just as she was about to square the ball
across a crowded box. – to be fair to the referee he acknowledged afterwards
that he’d got that wrong but without assistant referees qualified or otherwise it’s
an impossible task, to spot everything.
As Staveley pressed on for the equaliser the inevitable gaps
appeared at the back and Kirsty Bradley scored twice in the final fifteen
minutes, firstly she won the footrace with Coran Wright and lobbed Staveley’s ‘keeper
from the edge of the area, with the ball just creeping in at the far post and
she completed her hat-trick with a cross shot which ended up inside the same
post.
