The good ship Staveley Miners Welfare set sail on its maiden
away voyage of 2015 / 2016 and returned from Brigg Town with all three points
following an entertaining encounter which had just about the proverbial
“everything”.
There were a few changes to the starting eleven from the
last game against Bridlington Town and in came Jordan Hardman, replacing Alex
Pugh in the centre of defence. To his left was Captain James Leggit in for
James Finnegan and Ellis Wall and Jamie York were promoted from the bench
following their game changing introduction last time out.
Staveley in their new changed strip of orange started the
game kicking towards the burger van and played at a frenetic pace that saw them
dominate the first half…
…as early as the first minute Ross Goodwin had a shot
cleared off the line and into the third, Ellis Wall brought the ball down and
sent Jamie Brown off on a run, he, checked back and passed to Kurtis Morley who
unleashed a shot which cannoned off the underside of the cross bar and
according to the officials down on the wrong side of the line as far as
Staveley were concerned.
Brigg mustered only a sporadic threat in the first half and
after five minutes a period of pressure forced a half-hearted penalty claim from
the home side when Jason Fisher, in goal for Staveley rushed out to block a
through ball just as the striker was about to pull the trigger.
Twelve minutes in and Kurtis Morley collected a long pass
forward on the edge of the area and knocked it back to Ellis Wall he, twisted
and pinged an inch perfect pass with the outside of his right boot out left and
into the path of Jamie Brown who fed Mohammed Tijani in the box his shot
deceived Nick Tudor in goal for Brigg who, dived to his left as Tijani’s shot
went to his right but agonisingly for the travelling Trojans, Tudor managed to
save with his legs.
Five minutes later Tijani was in the thick of it again, this
time he rose to meet an Adam Scott corner, won when the flying winger collected
a superb cross field pass from James Leggit and his cross was blocked, Tudor
though punched to safety.
Leggit then set Tijani off again with a carbon copy pass but
again that elusive deserved goal just would not arrive as Tijani’s looping
hooked volley over the onrushing Tudor landed on top of the net.
Staveley were perhaps too dominant / over confident and in
overplaying it a bit in front of their own box they allowed Corey Mortimer from
the left hand side of the box to strike but Jason Fisher was equal to it and
Ross Goodwin cleared up the rebound.
On the half hour mark Adam Scott nearly scored straight from
a corner and four minutes later he was found by delightfully lofted Jamie York
ball which he took under his spell instantly and danced around Harry Lomas only
for the left back to get a slight touch out for a corner. From which Ross
Goodwins flicked header was cleared off the line by Alex Rookyard.
The pitch at the Hawthorns is a bit on the small side and
this aided the attacking nature of the game… requiring just two short passes
Brigg were on the edge of the area once again with five players on the attack,
Staveley swarmed back to block but couldn’t prevent Sam O’Malley heading
against the crossbar which signalled the end of a breathless first half which
unbelievably ended 0-0.
Fans still in the half time pie queue will have missed
Mohammed Tijani being felled just outside the right hand edge of the box near
the byline, three minutes after the restart and they will have also missed
Jamie Brown rising highest to nod Adam Scotts clipped cross from the freekick
into the back of the net to give Staveley the lead they deserved.
Brigg Town 0-1 SMWFC
The lead lasted just five minutes as Briggs Corey Mortimer
squared the ball to an unmarked Jonathon Slater who smashed in the equaliser
from 20 yards.
Brigg Town 1-1 SMWFC
Staveley really should’ve been out of sight in the first
half and the exertion and frustration from the first half clearly showed in the
second, however they dug deep and after collecting the ball from a twice taken
Brigg freekick which had ricocheted off the defensive wall, Jamie York set
Jamie Brown off on a run with a cheeky back heel flick, Browns eventual shot
was parried by Nick Tudor but only into the path of Ellis Wall who got to the
ball before a host of defenders and steered it past the stranded Tudor and put
Staveley back in front on 63 minutes.
Brigg Town 1-2 SMWFC
After Adam Scott had wriggled his way through four
challenges and honestly stayed on his feet only to weakly fire at the ‘keeper
and Jamie Brown had hit the post, substitute Kieran Watson showed great
persistence and determination on the byline, inside the six yard box to find
space to shoot after being hounded by three defenders and lifted the ball over
Nick Tudor to score!.
Brigg Town 1 – 3 Staveley
Breathing space at last! But with still fifteen minutes left
a visibly tiring Staveley still needed to keep going as Brigg were not done yet.
With eleven minutes left Phil Winn stole in on the back post following a free
kick and brought his side back into the game with a diving header firmly
planted past Jason Fisher.
Brigg Town 2 – 3 Staveley
There was still time for an equaliser but what had been a
great game ended in controversy as Ellis Wall saw red for a sliding challenge
in which he caught a Brigg defender making a clearance, it was low and on the
ground and perhaps a yellow was more appropriate but the referee deemed
otherwise.
Brigg pressed forward trying to make the man advantage count
and had several half chances to score and even more drama was to follow when,
Staveley ‘keeper Jason Fisher plucked the ball out of the air and was barged
into by at least three forwards, a melee ensued and when the dust had settled
three players went into the referees notepad including a bemused looking Jason
Fisher!
Staveley held firm for the remaining five minutes of the 58
minute half and collected the first three points of the season.
An excellent attacking performance from Staveley in an
entertaining game spoiled by the tetchy last few minutes.
