It’s a case of which Staveley will turn up at the
moment, we came down to earth with a
bump with a 4-1 defeat in our first game after, a reasonably promising preseason,
then went back into orbit again knocking neighbours Worksop Town out of the FA Cup, and in thrashing Thackley 5-1,showed we're more than capable of "mixing it" with anyone in the division.
However we got out of jail a bit against Nostell thanks to Nathan
Forbes and a double from Matt Thorpe (3-1) only to come crashing back to reality
again with a disappointing 4-0 defeat last night against Shaw Lane Aquaforce
when, the curse of non league football struck again with half the squad unavailable for one reason or
another.
Lets hope everyone is fit and available for our next game
because it’s a big one….
Rainworth Miners Welfare
30/08/14 - Away - FA Cup - 3pm.
Rainworth began life
in 1922 and apparently became the first Miners Welfare team to make it to step
four of the non league pyramid in 2010 when they won promotion from our own
Northern Counties East League Premier Division after finishing in second place.
A remarkable achievement when you consider
that only 5 years previous they were in the central midlands league, and the
man who masterminded all this was non other than former Staveley Manager Rudy
Funk.
Renerths (they’re called the Wrens so….that must be how its pronounced)
previous best achievement was a treble trophy winning season topped off by a
place in the FA Vase final in 1981-82.

Despite their brief time
in the NCL we played them quite a few times, on 24/11/2007 Ryan Damms scored twice to
give us the lead before Rainworth ralied and scored two late goals to take all
three points away from Inkersall Road, the away game was a little more straight
forward we lost 2-0.
In fact we haven’t faired that well against them at all, the
season after we were knocked out of the league cup and managed only one draw in
the two league games, the other clearly ending in defeat (2-1) however its
worth noting that our goal scorer that day was non-other than Lee Gregory who
now plys his footballing trade in…The Championship with Millwall!!!
Season so far…
The start to 2014/15 could hardly have been much worse,
Manager Scott Rickards left the day before the first game to be replaced by his
assistant Dean Short, and that off the field upheaval hasn't helped things on
the field either...
...An opening day 6-0 defeat was followed by a creditable 2-2
draw against Mickleover Sports, which in turn was followed by a 2-0 defeat to
Lincoln United and anoter 5-0 hammering against Sheffield FC last time out, leaving Rainworth
bottom of the pile on 1 point from four games.

As for Rainworth they have little time left to learn the
harsh realities of football at this level or one of this year’s relegation
places will be decided, if it hasn’t already, well before Christmas!
So, on paper we've got a good chance however whilst we've had
a reasonable start I won’t be counting any chickens just yet as, someone once said
football is a funny old game and the Fa Cup does tend to throw up the funniest
of old games.
