Buxton head into town this Saturday to begin our preseason. It seems like years since the world cup final and I for one cannot wait for
it….
So what do we know about them?
- Established :1877 as a spinoff from the cricket team (which still exists by the way)
- Nickname: The Bucks
- Home ground: Situated at 1000 ft above sea level “Silverlands” is apparently the highest ground in the English league Pyramid.
- Derbyshire cup winners 10 times.
Entered the “Combination” league in 1891 and then Manchester
league in 1899 winning the title in 1932 and gaining promotion to the chesire
League, winning the title and promotion to the northern Premier 40 years later,
gaining a best position of 4th
in 1981.
Their best performance in the FA cup came in 1951 when after
seeing off Rawmarsh Welfare in the first round, they despatched Division 3
(south) club Aldershot 4-3 before going out to Doncaster Rovers of Division 2
in round 3.
A number of players have progressed to football league clubs
after wearing Buxton Blue, notably Johnathon Howard – If only goal line
technology had be in use back in 1997 eh Spireites? and one of our own goalkeeper Ian Deakin
The News
Staveley: The obvious one to start with is…the new table
football machine and beer pumps which have been installed in the club house…
Seriously though this game marks the first opportunity to
see the players this season and I think you’ll be impressed, with the new faces...
Goalkeeper Steve Hernandez joins us from Parramores and
brings with him former Welfare favourites forward, Nathan Forbes and midfield
maestro Jordan Eagers.
Joining those three are former Ilkeston Town man Jack Watts,
and former Rainworth player Henry Sibenge.
As if those weren’t enough theres apparently a few more coming too!
Buxton: have also been busy in the close season signing
several high profile non league players, experienced defender Greg Young once of
Sheffield Wednesday and York joined previous new signings Liam Hardy and
Matlock’s Shaun Tuton “tutes” also played for us at one stage.
Returning to the bucks for this season is player assistant
manager Tim Ryan and Derek Niven the same Derek Niven that played nearly 300
games for the Spireites.
Haven’t I seen you before?
Buxton were in the Northern Counties League as recently as
2006, but we haven’t fared that well against them.. in the league at least.
Our
best result being a draw in December 2000 – as season that would see us finish
bottom of the Premier League.

We did however manage a 2-1 second round presidents cup win
in 1999…away as well! However we didn’t get much further in the competition
crashing out 4-3 to Glasshoughton in the next round.
Final thoughts?
Its preseason, sit back, relax, soak up the sun and grab a
beer while you're at it…*
