Report v Worksop Parramore

After easily the worst performance of the season, (v Glasshoughton) Staveley Miners Welfare produced one of their best… which has been said a few times this season.

The last away day of the season was against Worksop Parramore, and early on it was clear that Staveley were determined to show that they were not “already on the beach” as it had appeared at Glsshoughton.

The game had barely started when on the attack Josh Scully nipped in before defender Parra’s defender Lee Hill, the advantage was played because the ball had fallen to Ryan Dickinson, the left back passed to Jamie Smith whose shot went over the crossbar.

The challenge from Hill left Scully in some considerable pain which after lengthy treatment from both teams medics, saw him leave the field of play on a stretcher. At the time It looked likely to be a nasty injury and it remains to be seen if he will be able to play on Saturday but Josh did take his place in the bar afterwards! Taking his place on the field was Sam Finlaw.

Staveley were on top and created a few half chances before Matt Thorpe broke free of the defence and hit a shot across the keeper from the right hand side, which arrowed nicely into the back of the net. 23 minutes gone

0-1

Following another Michael Trench burst down the left the ball squirmed its way to Ryan Dickinson who had moved upfield to support Trench, he squared the ball just behind Oli Ryan on the edge of the box, the forward returning after a two game absence moved towards the ball however, and managed to touch the ball towards Jamie Smith, Staveleys Captain narrowly missed latching on to the ball though.

Just as Staveley were looking in complete control they let the lead slip when Lee Hill headed home a free kick on 33 minutes.

1-1

Just as the half time whistle was about to sound, Parramore went into the lead with an unstoppable long range effort from Callum Ward, and Staveley ended the half , from out of nowhere 2-1 down.

2-1 HT

Jonathan Wafula replaced the injured Oli Ryan and along with Jamie Smith was instrumental in creating a whole host of chances that Staveley couldn’t convert. The best of which fell to smith who one on one with the onrushing keeper slid the ball underneat , only to see it rebound of the post to Jonathan Wafula who returned the ball with interest and saw his strike hit the angle and out to safety.

The half continued in much the same vain chance after chance was being created, but the ball would just not go in.

That is until the ball ended up at the boot of Parramores former Staveley forward Nathan Forbes – Swindells. His 20 yard strike flew into the welfare net completely against the run of play on 79 minutes and effectively killed any hope of Staveley getting at least the equaliser that their play deserved.

The game finished 3-1 to Parramores whose fans summed it up perfectly as we were leaving the ground…

"the best team lost”
