A six pointer with only three on offer

We've put the miles in this week. On Wednesday 23rd October Staveley Miners Welfare travelled up to the banks of the river Humber to face Barton Town Old Boys.

A school boy error in expecting the night time temperature to be the same as it was in the afternoon lead to a very cold night watching the lads in nothing more than a T-shirt and  a very flimsy coat.

There wasn't much excitement in the first half to warm the cockles either, the ball spending more time in the air than the RAF did in 1940, and very few memorable chances were created. Hence the 0-0 half time  scoreline.

The second half got worse for us as a long range shot found its way into the Staveley net on 48 minutes followed up on 88 minutes with Bartons second. Giving them a 2-0 victory.

Staveley did create two really good chances but really the best bit of the game as far as we were concerned were the two cups of tea and mega sausage rolls at half time.

Barton Town Old Boys 2 - 0 Staveley -

coulda perhaps shoulda but didn’t.

That game set us up lovely for the trip to Tadcaster Albion on Saturday 26th October. Them in second and us in “lower midtable” without at least 6 what you would call first team players.

Circumstances like that though always provide an opportunity to others and provided a perfect test of the clubs ethos of generating its own players from the academy.

So the Welfare started the game against the vastly experienced Brewers with  at least five players all under the age of 20 and four more on the bench!

Tadcaster took the game to Staveley early on creating a few chances but the lads held on and created a few half chances of their own Sam Finlaw hit the outside angle of post and crossbar from an acute angle after a great cross from Phil Austin and Pat Lindley blazing over “on the stretch  after a square pass from the left being the pick of our chances.

Well “in it” Staveley conceded a softish goal just after halftime to Tadcasters experienced striker Carl Stewart, who was later somehow not sent off after a bit of argy bargy whilst already on a yellow card, a fact taddys bench was quick to recognise as he was quickly substituted whilst still laughing at the referee.

Far from being disheartened the lads rallied and set about the task of getting the equaliser, which came from the boot of man of the match Pat Lindley in the 86 minute who swivelled in the box and rifled a shot past the keeper!!!

A well deserved point from a 1-1 draw.

After a week of travelling a combined total of 236 miles Staveley Miners Welfare host local neighbours

PARKGATE - Wednesday 30th October - 7:45pm - Home

This game is the proverbial 6 pointer as the Steelmen sit just one point below us and with us having played a game less and this match gives us a real opportunity to put some daylight between us and the bottom of the table.

The men from the Roundwood sports Complex in Rotherham are on a terrible run of form having lost five of the last six league games conceding 19 goals and scoring only 6.

Staveley Manager Neil Cluxton will be rightly proud of what his young team achieved at Tadcaster and will have some interesting decisions to make on Wednesday, regarding team selection.

If they play anything like they did last time out, we’re in for a cracker!

As always £5 Adults £3 concessions, the cheapest bar / cafe in the NCEPL and

"by far the greatest team the world have ever seen"

Up the Welfare.
