The Lads take on reigning League Two champions Chesterfield
on Monday 28th July with a 7:30pm kick off.
The Spireites have been doing the rounds locally of late
sending a variety of different strength sides to face Sheffield FC, Buxton
Alfreton and Matlock and it will probably be more of the same against us a few, first team players, trialists and academy prospects.

1898/9 Season – Chesterfield FC The Official History 1867 2000” by Stuart Basson
“steadiness was the watchword under Gilles. This was indicated
by the lack of transfer activity during the summer of 1898, only the full-back
PETER BARLEY, and a forward named George Smith joining, from Sheepbridge Works
and Sheffield United respectively”
Peter Barley was born in Staveley in in 1877 and played 24
midland league, 2 Derbyshire league 2 FA Cup and 1 Derbyshire FA Senior Cup
game in that 1898 season and helped Chesterfield to a 4th place
finish in the Midland League.
Chesterfield moved into Division 2 the following season
where Peter played a further 3 league games a 0-0 draw against Leicester Fosse
a 0-4 defeat against Burslem Port Vale and a 5-3 win v Gainsborough Trinity.
That same season he also played 5 Fa Cup games, before leaving
to join Staveley Town, going on to represent Poolsbrook United, Grassmoor Red
Rose, Thornhill United (Rotherham as they sort of became) Seymour Colliery and
Lowgates United. Having previously turned out for Hartington (2 spells) and
Sheepbridge before Chesterfield. “Lucky whites and Spireites” – by Stuart
Basson.
Peter Barley later married Maud Mary Reeve and lived out the
rest of his life at number 1 Renshaws Row Staveley working as a coal miner and the father of at least 17
(seventeen) children!
One of whom was my Grandmother!
