First Team: Season 1995 - 1996

Its fair to say that 1994/ 95 had not met the high standards that Staveley Miners Welfare had set themselves over previous seasons but you can’t win them all and despite the lower midtable finish they still managed to hold onto their place in the Central Midlands Supreme Division for 1995 / 1996 and began that campaign in….

August

19th - Rossington (A)A heatwave had rendered preseason a relative non-event with little “competitive” friendly action and the pitch was dusty, bone dry and rock hard and therefore difficult to play on and the season got off to a bad start as Staveley lost 1-0 to the side that finished bottom of the division the season before having only survived relegation due to five other teams either moving leagues or folding altogether. 1-0 L

26th -Case Sports (H) The first point of the season was earned during a 1-1 draw at home to divisional new boys Case Sports who having been promoted the season before had had a good start to the season with a win and a draw in their first two games. Although the goal scorer remains a mystery…

28th Nettleham(A) Jayme Allen, Phil Greaves and Lee Vernon scored the goals that made sure all three points came back from Lincolnshire., it was a close run thing at Mulsanne Park though as the home side rattled in two of their own. 2-3 W

September

2nd - Kiveton Park(A)A more comfortable three points were wrapped up thanks to first half strikes from Jayme Allan and Steve Botchett who beat the keeper at his near post with a twenty yard snap shot. Despite the dominance of Staveleys defence, David Hoole and Lee Vernon down the wings and Phil Greaves and Neil Cluxton in midfield the home side pulled a goal back through a Jackson header in the second half. It proved to be only a consolation as Vernon and Allan again scored to make it 1-4, a great win considering the likes of Wragg, Bicknell, Mullins, Paul Brodie, Glynn Kirkwood and Paul Nicholls were all unavailable.

9th Mickleover Sports(H)Staveleys mini run came to an end as despite dominating for large periods they couldn’t come up with the final ball and rarely troubled the visitors goal and fell behind in the 35th minute following a goalmouth scramble, Lee Vernon did equalise on 62 minutes with a cheeky back heel in which two defenders left it to each other to clear but Mickleover scored again within a minute and again ten minutes from time. 1-3 L

13th Kimberley Town (H)It was back to winning ways courtesy of a solitary goal from Kevin? Wragg. 1-0 W.

16th Heanor Town(A)The programme from a Staveley perspective made note that the side was short of several players which is never ideal when you’re going up against the reigning league champions but it has to be said that the line up wasn’t that much different from the previous game.

The first half is best forgotten as Staveley were 2-0 down at the break but the back four of Mick Collins, Nigel Bailey, Kevin Wragg and Andy Knowles deserved a modicum of credit for keeping the scoreline down.

A rousing team talk from Dave Tromans ensured the second half would be a completely different affair and this time it was Staveley who applied the attacking pressure. First to profit was Kevin Wragg as he got on the end of a Nigel Bailey freekick heading home at the far post. The equaliser came courtesy of Steve Botchett who reacted quickest to the rebound after the home ‘keeper had made a fine save from Lee Vernon and not content with salvaging a point from what looked like being a heavy defeat “young” Neil Cluxton chose the perfect time to score his first goal for the club, by volleying home Andy Knowles knock down and in the process inflicted a first defeat in 22 games on Heanor Town, who had also had their goal nets stolen in the week. 2 - 3 W

20th Gedling (H)- Neil Cluxton didn’t have long to wait for his second goal for the club as he and Steve Botchett scored to grab a share of the points. 2-2 D

26th Shirebrook Town (H) - Another three points were wrapped up thanks to David Hoole’s solitary strike. 1-0 W

30th Trafford (A) (Fa Vase 2nd Qualifying round) Then Staveley made the trip across the Pennines and gave a good account of themselves against a team two division higher in the pyramid. Kieran Toal put the home side ahead on 25 minutes finishing off a good move with a shot into the bottom corner. Steve Botchett narrowly missed getting on the end of a Phil Greaves cross and Neil Cluxton headed wide as Staveley went in search of the equaliser. Which duly came after the break when Steve Botchett took advantage of a defensive mix up and slotted home from close range. Steve Jackson restored Traffords lead with a long range drive which gave Andy Hall in the Staveley goal no chance. On 58 minutes Steve Botchett once again equalised diving in to head home a Mick Collings cross which had been flicked on by Phil Greaves. But the tie was settled with two home goals in two minutes just after the hour mark, Colin Smart with the fourth. 4-2 L

7th Oakham United (H) Staveley were nicely poised in second place and the game of the day saw Staveley leap frog the visitors and top the table after a Jayme Allan brace and another from goal machine Steve Botchett goal gave us a 3-1 win at Inkersall Road.

10th Collingham (A) (Wakefield Floodlit Cup)The cup for teams with floodlights was next up and it’s fair to say once again that this competition ranked rather low on the list of priorities for Staveley Miners Welfare in the previous seasons. But only two changes were made to the starting line up with Houghton in goal and D.Thompson wearing the number seven shirt. That consistency brought a much better start to the competition this time around as Jayme Allen and Steve Botchett scored one each in the 1-2 win – the other goalscorer isn’t marked so maybe it was an own goal and there wasn’t an option to denote it on the typewriter!

18th Heanor Town (H)The excitement! Of actually doing well in the Floodlit cup was short lived as the men from South Derbyshire won 0-3.

21st - Harworth Colliery Institute (H) Staveley blew away the leagues bottom side at Inkersall Road with a blistering first half display. After going close on more than one occasion Jayme Allen finally broke the deadlock, drilling home from close range. Moments later two goals in as many minutes from Steve Botchett and Roy Goodall. Goodall returning from holiday looked all the better for the rest as he combined with Botchett to score a fourth which unfortunately was chalked off for offside. Not for the first or the last time the second half was completely different and the cricket score that had been threatened never materialised as the away side put the back four of Collins, Wragg, Knowles and Vernon under constant pressure but only managed to breech the defensive wall in the final moments and Staveley hung onto the three points. 3 - 1 W

And this week's winners in the “80 Club” were 1st:Barbara Ratcliffe (£35), 2nd Tony Barnes (£20) and 3rd.Andy Knowles (£10), places are still available for £1 per week.

Also it’s a massive thanks to Mr Fred Oldfield for his kind donation to the club. Fred is a former follower of the (now defunct) Staveley Works Teams.

25th Heanor Town (A) (WFLC) There haven’t yet been statistics compiled as to who Staveley have played the most but I imagine Heanor Town would be near the top of that table (should it ever get produced… ;) ) and the town ground in Heanor was once again the midweek venue for the floodlit cup where Steve Botchett grabbed a brace in a 2-2 draw.

28th Sneiton(A) (Central Midlands League Cup)An entertaining encounter deep in the heart of Nottingham saw the home sides ‘keeper Robert Holness repel wave after wave of Staveley attacks in the first 20 minutes, but against the run of play Sneiton scored from the penalty spot and held the lead into the break.  Andy Knowles however equalised shortly after the restart when he scrambled the ball over the line following a Steve Botchett head down from Vernons corner. Jayme Allan and Roy Goodall both had very good chances but so did Sneiton, missing an open goal from 6 yards in the dying moments ensuring a replay would be required. 1-1 D

November

4th Sneiton (H) (CML CupR) – of course managers would sooner go through than go out but no one like a replay unless it’s one like this one. The same team that struggled the week before rattled in five with only one in reply this time around, Paul Brodie, Steve Botchett(again) and Jayme Allan with three.  5-1 W

8th Collingham(H) (WFLC) – you’d have to look hard for information regarding this cup competition but apparently one goal each from Steve Botchett and Jayme Allan ensured a 2-1 win and that victory meant Staveley had made it out of the group stage and into the quarter finals for the first time ever!! 2-1 W

11th Rossington(H) after four straight cup games it was back to the league and it may have been remembrance day but I doubt anyone will remember this 0-0 Draw

18th Long Eaton United (A) – Things didn’t go much better in the next game D.Thompson did score but four were let in… 4-1 L

22nd Thorne Colliery (H) –  An Ady Wells Hattrick and a solitary strike from Mick Hoskins ensured a 4-0 win and sent Staveley top of the Central Midland Leagues top division but not only that, the Sunday League and Reserves sides managed by Phil Greaves and Daz Evans were also top of their respective divisions!

25th Case Sports(A) – Steve Botchett out jumped the homes sides ‘keeper to nod Staveley in front after only two minutes, then Vernon hit the post and new signing from Alfreton Dave Kind outpaced the defence only to be hit into row z by the ‘keeper who escaped with just a warning in a breathless first half that left Staveley disappointed to only be going in one goal to the good. In the second half as is always the case the home side piled on the pressure but Staveley hit them on the break and Steve Botchett scored following a great run and cross down the right from Mick Collins. Case pulled one back late on but Staveley now down to 10 men following Steve Botchetts dismissal (for reacting to the umpteenth “nasty” challenge on him) held on. 1-2 W

29th Stanton Ilkeston(H) Derbyshire Senior Cup –Two branches of the same Ironworks company (Stanton and Staveley – see below for non-locals) went head to head at Inkersall Road.

Richard Jowett put the visitors ahead in the first minute of the game but their lead didn’t last long as in the third…Ady Wells raced onto a through ball from Roy Goodall and coolly beat the advancing Hurst in goal, to equalise. After 20 minutes Staveley were in the lead thanks to yet another goal from Steve Botchett who nodded home a corner taken by Vernon. Stanton offered precious little in the second half with the ball mainly being stuck the feet of the home side but the mythical final ball once again proved to be elusive for Staveley who only made sure of progression and the bragging rights at the next company board meeting when Steve Botchett glanced a corner in at the far post late on.

December

2nd Nettleham(H) – In thick fog Staveley went 0-1 down after twenty minutes when a dubious free kick was driven into the bottom corner, but the scores were level ten minutes later when Vernon cross for new signing from Oakham United, Graham Millington to glance home with his head. The fog got even worse after the break and the game suffered as a result and few chances were created… but with Steve Botchett on your side one chance is usually enough and those in attendance that could still see the action were treated to a spectacular overhead kick which gave the Nettleham ‘keeper absolutely no chance! 2-1 W

9th South Normanton (A) – Although top of the league Staveley had played more games than the other title chasers around them so it was important to keep racking the wins up.

However results towards the end of the calendar year were pretty horrific and this trip to third place South Normanton ended in a 4-2 defeat with Steve Botchett and Vernon on the score sheet.

13th Gresley Rovers (H) (DSC) next came a crushing 1-4 defeat at home in the cup although to be fair the opponents were placed much higher in the football pyramid. Andy Knowles with the goal.

16th Gedling Town (A) – Another disappointing defeat followed, this time losing 2-0 to a side in lower midtable. This was also to be Steve Botchetts last appearance for the club as his exploits had earned him a move to Ashfield United, in the Northern Counties East League and although it was a massive blow it’s unfair to stand in players way in their attempts to “make it” and everyone wished him well..

23rd Glapwell(A) Even worse was to follow on Christmas Eve eve. The home side took the lead from the penalty spot but Roy Goodall soon levelled matters. The pitch was terrible thanks to the wintery conditions and the game had been doubtful right up to kick off, however the saying goes that it’s the same for both sides and Glapwell managed to get to grips with it and scored four in a mad twenty minute spell for Staveley. The second half was an improvement and Bob Gent reduced the arrears midway through and Staveley had more chances to make the scoreline respectable but in the end paid the price for that sloppy opening. 5-2 L

January

6th Case Sports (H) – New year resolutions went out of the window as did the league cup campaign in this 1-2 defeat at Inkersall Road. Goal scorer was the prolific Paul Nicholls (he once scored eight in one game) who was battling back from a serious set of injuries that had curtailed his involvement for the last two seasons.

20th Kiveton Park(H) – Other sides in the division had three or four games in hand and the poor run of form saw Staveley drop ten points behind the leaders meaning winning the title now looked a tall order but all you can do is keep trying and a 1-0 win and a welcome three points were secured thanks to Andy Knowles.

February

3rd Heanor Town(H) –The month started badly with a 0-3 defeat but it sparked a mini revival in fortunes as Staveley would only lose once more in the league in what was left of the season.

14th Shirebrook Town(H) (WFLC QF1) – the first leg of the Wakefield cup quarterfinal went well with goals from Mick Collins and Bob Neale giving Staveley a 2-1 win

17th Thorne Colliery (A) – a disappointing 0-0 draw with the leagues bottom club was followed up by…

24th Glapwell(H) - …a superb 2-1 win over the club second in the league, ending their seventeen match unbeaten run in the process. The visitors took the lead early in the first half courtesy of an own goal from Kevin Wragg heading past Hall in goal. Despite the setback Staveley kept their heads up and took the game to the high fliers. Bob Neale headed against the woodwork and had another effort scrambled off the line, but it was third time lucky for Bob Neale and just before the break his header sailed into the back of the net following Baileys free kick.

Dave Brocklehurst making his debut was “prominent” in midfield and the woodwork denied the homes side twice early on in the second half and Nicholls and Vernon were guilty of missing good chances and with time running out it seemed as though the scores would remain level but Neil Cluxton forced the ball over the line following a succession of corners and Hall produced a superb save at the other end to secure a magnificent victory.

27th - Shirebrook(A)(WFLCQF2) – Despite holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg the floodlit cup adventure came to an end at Langwith road in this 3-0 defeat.

March

2nd Sandiacre Town (A) – the cup exit signalled the end of any hope of silverware and it was now just a case of playing out the season trying to finish as high as possible. Paul Nicholls scored but the points were shared. 1-1 D

9th Harworth Colliery Institute (A) - Staveleys opponents have been pretty much near the bottom all season but their recent revival, which included making the semi-finals of the floodlit cup, continued as the Inkersall Road men crashed to a 3-1 defeat…Craig Myhill with the consolation.

16th Sandiacre(H) – Kevin Wragg got the only goal of the game and started what was to be the best unbeaten run of the season.

But it was with great sadness that the club announced that committee member Doxey Walker had sadly passed away. “He was a tireless worker on the ground where his expertise were invaluable. He was formerly a groundsman with the borough council and was responsible for the preparation of the wicket at Queens Park for the County games. Our deepest condolences go to his widow Margaret and the rest of his family”

On a brighter note prolific centre forward Paul Nicholls became a father and apparently it won’t be long before his son is wearing his first pair of football boots!

30th Mickleover Sports(A) – Neil Cluxton and Dave Brocklehurst ran the show in midfield and the home side struggled to get going all afternoon. In fact it was Cluxton himself that gave Staveley the lead midway through the first half after a mistake by the home goalkeeper. Phil Greaves made it two from a difficult angle minutes later and after the break further goals from Cluxton, Bob Neale and Steve Taylor, scoring with his first touch in a Staveley shirt ensured an emphatic 0-5 win!.

Perhaps the mickleover programme editor knew what was coming as he provided quite a lot of distracting “entertainment” within his / her publication for this game …enjoy.

April

6th South Normanton(H) Just one point separated Staveley in fourth with their opponents in fifth before kick-off and … after the final whistle to. Dave Brocklehurst with his first for the club in this 1-1 Draw

13th Shirebrook Town (A)Two goals from Bob Neale was enough to secure the points and the home side could only manage one in reply. 1-2 W 20th Long Eaton(H) – The last home game of the season ended in a 0-0 draw.

23rd Oakham United(A) Staveley travelled to the Hosiery Mills Ground to face the champions-elect who after finishing the last two seasons as runners up needed just one more point to go one better this time around following Glapwell’s 3-0 loss last week which dropped them out of the running. Staveley were one of the very few teams to have beaten the hosts this season but despite a goal from left back Nigel Bailey they were unable to spoil the party as Oakham got the point they needed and no doubt celebrated their title win long into the night! 1-1 D

May

4th Kimberley(A)That just left one game to play and Bob Gent and Andy Knowles wrapped up the final points of the season in a 1-2 win.
