First Team:1994 - 1995

August

20th v Oakham United (H) - Staveley began what was to be an up and down in and out second season in the Central Midlands Supreme Division with Chairman Henry Ireson welcoming everyone back to a continually improving Inkersall Road and hoped to be able to introduce everyone to the new stand (no details as to whether it had actually been completed in time though!) the game didn't live up to the excitement however  a 1- 5 defeat, Jamie Bettney with the consolation after some good work by Bas Sharman.

24th v Rossington (H) - the disappointing start to the season was soon put to bed though as the three points were secured thanks to a 3-2 win courtesy of Rob Atkin Jamie Bettney and Mick Hoskins.

27th v South Normanton Athletic (A) - Early season form took another dive, this time losing 3-1 with Jamie Bettney once again proving to be the bright spark with his third goal in as many games.

29th v Shirebrook Town (H) - A Rob Atkin goal ensured the points were shared in this local-ish derby game.

September

3rd v Daisy Hill (H) (FA Vase 1st Preliminary )  - The clubs first ever fixture in this prestigious National Cup competition saw them face a side hailing from Westhoughton in Bolton and, it was a successful first outing winning 3-1.  Ady Wells got in on the personal goal scoring battle that Jamie Bettney and Rob Atkin were having at the start of the season.

Football was soon put into perspective however as before the next game Staveley Miners Welfare were rocked by the news that their popular and talented goalkeeper Jamie Booth who made his 39th appearance in the Vase game had passed away...aged just 25.

Rest in peace "Boothy"

16th v Sheffield Aurora (A) - After the events of the last two weeks getting back into the action is just what Staveley needed but probably not Friday night on a "plastic pitch". The home side used the familiarity with the pitch to their advantage early on and adopted a shoot on sight policy with the ball "zipping around like a ping pong ball".

Aurora skied a  penalty over the bar early on but took the lead via long range deflected shot which gave 17 year old Wayne Styles in goal no chance.

After sort of getting used to the surface Andy Knowles equalised by converting a cross from the left after Rob Thompson had stung the hands of Aurora 'keeper Andy Cutts.

Staveley had two simple chances in the second half to take all the points but had to settled for just the one in the end as it finished 1-1.

24th v Borrowash Victoria (A) - Staveley were at the beginning of their worst run of results endured so far following the draw in the previous game was a 1-0 defeat in South Derbyshire

October

1st v Bootle (H) (Fa Vase 2p) - Entry to first team games had had to be put UP! to £1.50 as this was the minimum price that had to be charged to allow entry into the Vase, the fullness of time would prove entry into these national competitions to be a good thing but for this season the adventure proved to be short lived as Bootle ran out 0-2 winners.

to complete the story somewhat Bootle went on to beat Newcastle Town 7-6 in the next round (first round proper) and exited the competition 2-0 back in Derbyshire at the hands of Glossop North End.

5th v Gedling Town (H) (League Cup 1) - Paul Bicknell and Phil Greaves scored one each but the tie went to a replay as Staveleys defence couldn't stop Gedling scoring twice themselves.

12th Harworth Colliery Institute (A) (Wakefield Floodlight cup C) - Drawn in group C the cup for Supreme Division members that had floodlights go underway last season and just like last season Staveley didn't fair too well... Phil Greaves scored twice but it wasn't enough to prevent another defeat and the dismal run continued..4-2.

15th v Priory Eastwood (H) - Back to league matters and... a 0-5 defeat.

19th v Gedling Town (A) (LC 1r) - Worse was to follow as despite Rob Atkin and Darren Vernon finding the net, six were scored in reply and Staveley fell at the first hurdle. 6-2.

29th v Harworth Colliery (A) - The home side went ahead after twenty minutes thanks to a "Soft" goal from a freekick and nearly went two up soon after, but we're denied by a brilliant penalty save from Wayne Styles in goal for Staveley. five minutes before the break Rob Atkin headed the equaliser and that's how it stayed for the rest of the game. 1-1.

November

2nd v Harworth Colliery Institute (H) (WFLC C) - The cry of "Can we play you every week?" seems to have been taken literally by the fixtures secretary as for the third time in as many weeks the men from Scrooby Road were once again the opponents... despite a good start to the game Staveley fell behind when the opposition were given "far too much room" but they equalised soon after when Jamie Allen a young striker drafted in after some good displays in the reserve side scored from a tight angle on his debut after the 'keeper had made a mess of a clearance.

Staveley took the lead just after the break when, Jamie Allen was bundled over in the box following Darren Vernon  header against the crossbar, which was duly converted by Rob Atkin.

Harworths crossbar was rattled a further three times and their 'keeper produced three excellent saves but just as it seemed that the vital win that had been long overdue was secured Harworth found something and scored twice in a "dreadful" last five minutes to extend the winless run still further 2-3.

5th v Sandiacre Town (H) - The "good" thing about losing games early on in this season was that a good chunk of them were in the cups so, in the "bread and butter" of the league there was still plenty of time to move away from the wrong end of the table, although matching the 4th place finish from last season was going to be difficult... The team were playing well enough but just couldn't quite go that extra yard.

In this one though Staveley conceded the only goal of the game and never really looked like scoring in the 89 minutes that remained. 0-1

9th v Worksop Town (H) (Sheffield Senior Cup 1) - In chalking up the 11th game in a row without a win Staveley gave a good account of themselves against  the side that would end the season in 6th place, three divisions higher in what we would now call the Evostick North or South.

On a wet soggy night Jamie Bettney headed the home side in front after Rob Atkin had left two defenders for dead. That lead didn't last long however as the Tigers recovered from the shock and scored three quick goals.

Staveley didn't give up however and after a simple chance was missed Phil Greaves scored to give Staveley a bit of hope by trailing just 2-3 at half time.

That hope was extinguished in the second half however as Worksop scored two more goals to win the game 2-5.

16th v Heanor Town (H)(WFLC C) - Wayne Styles in goal for Staveley  came to their rescue more than once early on saving both time from Geraint Davies and scrambled a Paul Smith effort wide.

It wan't all Heanor though as Paul Bicknell fired just over before Ady Wells ran clear to slot the ball past Danny Bull to give Staveley the lead. the scores were soon level though as Town scored a dubious penalty.

Apparently it should have been 1-5 to Heanor at the break (suppose that depends on whose report you're reading!) but after the interval Paul Bicknell made it 2-1 to Staveley with a left footed cross shot. but once again they couldn't hold out and the final score was 2-2. Though Staveley did have a penalty claim turned down after the ball was cleared off the line by a defender.

19th v Kimberley Town (A) - The view from the "Stags" programme was that 1994/1995 was proving to be a difficult season for Staveley and that they were a workmanlike side who lacked ideas and directness when in the final third, and how right they were - losing this one 4-1, with young Jamie Allen once again on the score sheet.

23rd v Heanor Town(A) (WFLC C) - With no chance of qualifying from the group stages an experimental team was sent to the Town Ground and lost 0-4.

26th v Kiveton Park (H) - Another day another defeat 0-2 this time around.

December

3rd v Rossington (A) - Gary Vardy was signed to add much needed firepower as Staveley sought to solve that age old problem of scoring more than you let in and the former Shirebrook Town player duly delivered with both goals as finally after FIFTEEN games a win was recorded. 0-2!!! - the opposition being down to nine men helped considerably though

7th v Gedling (H) - That win was followed up by another...draw, with Andy Knowles, Mick Hoskins and now current (2015) Mickleover Sports manager 17 year old Glenn Kirkwood on the scoresheet. 3-3, it was a game that should have been won though.

10th v Heanor Town (A) - Another visit to the Town ground ended up pretty much the same as all the other visits battling against strong winds Staveley limited the league leaders to just the one goal at halftime.

The second half was completely different story however as poor defending allowed them to stretch that lead to 5. Bob Gent and Richard Thompson added a degree of respectability to the scoring in the last fifteen minutes. 5-2

12th - Jamie Booth Benefit game - Sheffield United v League 11- result unknown

17th v Long Eaton United (H) - Thankfully 'this' run of games without a win didn't last anywhere near as long as it did last time. On a less than perfect surface due to the recent heavy weather, good football was at  premium, nevertheless Glenn Kirkwood scored a "magnificent" header from a John Pepper cross to take a 1-0 Staveley lead into the break.

Long Eaton piled on the pressure in the second but it was Phil Greaves who settled the nerves with the second and Gary Vardy turned the ball home after a good run and cross from Richard Thompson to secure a valuable 3-0 win.

26th v Glapwell (H) - The reigning champions were in no mood to be dishing out presents and duly went away with all three points. 0-2.

January

7th v Nettleham (A) - Number one new year resolution was to "Score more goals and concede less"...and that's exactly what happened in the first game of 1995!.

A string of excellent save from Wayne Styles including an acrobatic tip over the bar and a Pete Milner clearance off the line kept "the Nettles" at bay early on and, against the run of play Glenn Kirkwood volleyed a Richard Thompson cross between the posts to give Staveley the lead. A lead which was doubled before half time by Darren Vernon who was on the end of a Craig Myhill cross, planting his header firmly past the Nettleham 'keeper.

Gary Vardy, Glenn Kirkwood, Darren Kelk and Richard Thompson all had chances to put the game to bed, but with ten minutes left Jones poked past Wayne Styles to ensure a nervy end to proceedings, but the defence - Wayne Styles in particular held firm and Staveley took a vital three points from their relegation rivals.  1-2

14th v Harworth Colliery Institute (H)(again) - A scrappy first half saw both keepers largely untested but Harworth were the better side going into the break.

The second half continued in much the same vein and only resolute "last ditch" defending from Andy Knowles and Kevin Wragg kept the scores level, until a vicious shot was parried by Wayne Styles only for Harworth's, Jones to bury the rebound into the roof of the net.

Harwoth sealed their 0-2 victory when the ball seemingly went in off Andy Knowles shoulder seven minutes from time.

21st v Kiveton Park (A) - Just five minute were on the clock when Richard Thompson slotted the ball past an out of position keeper from 20 yards to give Staveley the lead in atrocious conditions. Then, before the break Phil Greaves secured the points by smashing home Glenn Kirkwoods cross. it could've been more but Paul Bicknell saw his strike rebound off the post. 0-2

February

4th v Heanor Town (H) - the men from south Derbyshire had "the Lions" share of the possesion in the first half but did little to threaten the scoreboard. The second half  saw Staveleys pressing game come to the fore in particular Paul Bicknell and Pete Milner gave the away side no time on the ball and Staveley wrestled the initiative from their league leading opponents.

Richard Thompson dragged a shot wide and Darren Vernon fired tamely at the 'keeper when clear. those misses were to prove costly as Heanor's left back scored completely against the run of play and despite playing well enough just couldn't get the equaliser with Phil Greaves coming closest with a header that just flashed wide of the post...."we'll play much worse and win" said manager Dave Tromans after the match.

7th v Oakham United (H) - As the season entered the business end Staveley just couldn't get any sort of form going in terms of results and lost this one 0-2.

18th v Sheffield Aurora (H) - Darren Vernon equalised with a cool finish whilst one on one with the keeper but Staveley found themselves 1-2 down at half time after Wayne Styles had rushed from his goal and made it easy for the Aurora forward.

Staveley, denied a penalty at the start of the second half soon drew themselves level when Paul Bicknell rose like a salmon at the far post to nod home Phil Greaves flighted freekick, only for the visitors to take the lead again... the lads dug in though and managed to save point late on with  Bob Gent getting the final touch. 3-3.

March

4th v Kimberley Town (H) - Starting the just six points clear of the bottom two it was vital that some sort of run was put together it started well enough as Glen Kirkwood and Gary Vardy scored the two goals that secured al three points. 2-1

11th Sandiacre Town (A) - however the one step forward and two steps back curse that had dogged the majority of this season came back to haunt Staveley, losing this one 3-2. With Glenn Kirkwood and Gary Vardy on the scoresheet for the second week running.

18th v Gedling Town (A) ...and then lost this one 6-2. Gardy Vardy with both this time.

22nd Wakefield Floodlit Cup Final  - Harworth Colliery Institute v Oakham United - venue - Inkersall Road

25th v Shirebrook Town(A) - The longest unbeaten run of the season finally arrived just in time..although it has to be said that relegation never looked likely thanks in part to two or three teams who had had an even worse season than Staveley.

"little was seen of Shirebrook" in the first half and Glenn Kirkwood won the penalty which Richard Thompson duly despatched which gave Staveley the lead. it was however the same old story as the Langwith road outfit equalised and then but for a fine penalty save from Wayne Styles would have gone ahead.

Gary Vardy restored the lead ten minutes from time with a shot off the post, but the points were shared when a Shirebrook equaliser went in right on the final whistle.

April

1st v Nettleham (H) - Rob Langley was given a straight red card after 2 minutes for handling a goalbound effort so Staveley had to endure the 88 minutes with just ten men, luckily though Wayne Styles once again saved the resultant penalty. Just three minutes later another penalty was awarded but at the right end this time, but Gary Vardy, who had been so clinical of late also missed.

Staveley weren't to be denied however as Dave Bright scored just before half time and made it look like 'they' had the man advantage going close several times and having a stonewall penalty turned down, or at least for 44 minutes they did as they succumbed once again to a last minute equaliser.

Arguably the performance of the season though. 1-1

12th v South Normanton (H) - Dave Bright scored for the second week running to ensure a 1-0 win

17th v Glapwell (A) - the longest unbeaten run of the season lasted just three games and was ended at Hall Corner with the home sides 1-0 victory.

22nd v Long Eaton United (A) - In heavy rain Andy Knowles headed in a Richard Thompson cross to give Staveley a 0-1 lad at halftime. Bob Gent then increased that lead in similar fashion in the second half this time from a Lee Vernon corner and although Long Eaton managed to pull one back the lads held on to record a 1-2 victory!!.

26th v Borrowash Victoria (H) - The season petered out with two defeats first this one 0-1

29th v Priory Eastwood (A) Then this 3-2 one, with Phil Greaves and Gary Vardy on the score sheet.
