Sunday Team: 1991 - 1992

September

8th v Park Colts (H) - The Tarmac Homes Chesterfield Sunday League Division One campaign kicked off with a 3-1 victory. Newly signed frontman John Stacey (formerly of Blue Stoops) scored twice, either side of a goal from Darren Evans. One, from the penalty spot and a delightful chip over the keeper for a 3-0 lead, the future Staveley first team player Darren Vernon got the last minute consolation.

10th v Brampton Rovers (A) - two second half goals in two minutes from Paul Nicholls and John Stacey was enough to grab the points at Duckmanton Lodge. 0-2.

15th v Sainsburys FC (H) (Sheffield Sunday Cup 1) - there were a few buy one get one frees given out by the supermarket team as they were on the end of a 6-0 hammering courtesy of 2 goals each from Andy Knowles and Paul Nicholls and one each from Shane Turner and Steve Shipp who scored from the penalty spot.

22nd v Wingerworth (A) - A Shane Turner freekick diverted into the net by Andy Knowles was enough for a 0-1 win .

29th v Mastin Moor Miners Welfare (H) - Goalless at half time a Paul Nicholls hattrick and one from Gary Bagshaw ensured it was a miserable but short trip home for the away side.

October

6th v Grassmoor WMC (A) - The 100% start ended at Barnes Park but not without a fight after going 2-0 down Staveley "stormed" back to 2-2 with goals from Darren Evans who headed home Gary Bagshaws cross and Peter Kenworthys 20 yard effort which just crept over the line, only for Millington to grab the winner with 15 minutes left. 3-2

13th v Woolley Moor (A) (SSC 2) - After going a goal behind progress was assured thanks to three goals from Paul Nicholls and Peter Kenworthy who got 2.

20th v Coal Aston (A) - Steve Shipp levelled from the spot just before the end of the first half and no further goals were added in the second and so, the points were shared. 1-1.

November

3rd v KSPO (H) - The team formerly known as Civil Servants and Post Office the leagues most successful team of the last few years were no less successful in this game. A John Stacey free kick put the home side in the lead but a John Gould double and one from Paul Mann clinched a  1-3 win for Kenal Services Plumbing Operations - fortunately their new sponsor only required a slight acronym change.

The next two games appeared to have slipped the net with regards team details and reports, strange really when the scores have been recorded.

17th v Hasland Royals (H) (SSC 3) - There's something slightly strange about this fixture as there appears to be two different reports about it..

Firstly a 1-0 win against the odds as only ten players turned up to start the game with Andy Talbot scoring the goal and..

Secondly a replay resulting in a 7-0 win thanks to Joe Tomlinsons scorching volley, a bullet header from Darren Evans a chip from Paul nicholls and four from John Stacey.

There was clearly a need to replay the first fixture for some reason but whatever the reason Staveley  took their place in the next round, which was the very next game...

Amusing article from the programme!

24th v Hoyland Town Jaguars (H) (SSC 4) - The visitors opened the scoring with a delightful chip on fifteen minutes and were clearly a good side, however Staveley played well themselves contributing to an excellent game of football, but were unable to break through a strong back four.  With ten minutes left the Jaguars effectively sealed the game scoring from the penalty spot.

Steve Shipp did reduce the deficit with a penalty of his own but in trying to get the equaliser Staveley left the door open for Hoyland to score third and so the Sheffield Sunday Cup adventure ended here and the men from Barnsley-ish went through.

December

1st v Brampton Rovers (H) (Alma Cup 2) - a familiar face put staveley out of the cup at the first hurdle, the Saturday sides Kevin Lee scored for Rovers adding to Andy Woods opener. Steve Shipp reduced the arrears from the penalty spot but it was too little to late and the home side crashed out 1-2.

29th v Mastin Moor MW (A) - Out of two cup competitions it was important to get back to winning ways a soon as possible which, didn't take long. An Andy Knowles header, a close range Andy Talbot strike and Paul Nicholls 20 yarder, not necessarily in that order contributed the goals in the1-3 win.

January

12th v Park Colts (A) - The only game in the division to survive the weather saw a 2-1 win for the way said, Steve Talbot and that man again Paul nicholls were on target.

19th v Coal Aston (H) - The away side have become draw specialist with seven so far this season and number eight was chalked up as despite twice going ahead through Matt's Hunt and Hallam, John Stacey pegged them back both times. 2-2.

February

2nd v Woolley Moor (H) - Steve Shipp and Andy Talbot got the goals for Staveley, but they went down 2-3.

9th v Clowne MW (H) - After fifteen minutes Steve Shipp converted a penalty awarded after Gary Bagshaw had been felled. Bagshaw was also involved in the second his quickly taken free kick released Paul Nicholls who crossed for John Stacey to head home. it was three after just half an hour this time John Stacey turned provider squaring for Steve Botchett to score.

The away side shocked Staveley by scoring within two minutes of the restart and added a second 20 minutes later, the home side stood firm however and took the points. 3-2.

16th v Doe Lea (H) - A 30 yard "Blockbuster" from Andy Knowles added to Steve Botchetts edge of the box strike and a header from a Gary Bagshaw corner to secure a comfortable 3-0 home win.

23rd v Hepthorne Lane (H) - A 3-0 win courtesy of Pete Kenworthy scoring Steve Botchetts square pass at the second attempt.

Gary Bagshaws quickly taken free kick onto the head of Andy Knowles who squared it for Steve Botchett to stab in, with the 'keeper still sorting his wall out and after weathering a few chances Pete Kenworthy broke and returned the favour to Steve Botchett to score the third and keep Staveley in the hunt for the title.

March

1st v Woolley Moor (A) - Never an easy fixture especially not in these rainy conditions and a hectic first half saw Steve Shipp miss a penalty, John Stacey score with a header from a Gary Bagshaw corner and Woolley Moor equalise via the same method, only for John Stacey to restore Staveleys lead and Moor to equalise again before the break.

The second half continued at the same frenetic pace but no more goals were added thanks to Andy Marples missing a sitter for Staveley in the closing stages and a brilliant save from Walker to deny Woolley Moors Newton so a draw was probably the right result.

8th v Hasland PR (A)  - Aided and abetted by his defence Walker again provided the foundations to build on with a string of excellent saves. At the other end Gary Bagshaw had a chance cleared off the line before Steve Botchett ran clear to score his fifth in as many games.

A late penalty miss denied Staveley victory in this encounter as Rangers had scored by then following a goalmouth scramble.. 1-1.

15th v Clowne Miners Welfare (A) - With Brampton Rovers stealing a march thanks to a win over today's opponents in their last game it was important to get back to winning ways. which, they did 1-4  thanks to a John Stacey penalty double Steve Botchett and Andy Knowles and in doing so brought the top of the table to within 1 point.

22nd v Hasland PR (H) - an 88th minute winner from John Stacey gave the home side a 1-0 win and meant they kept pace with leaders Brampton Rovers who also won

29th v Brampton Rovers (H) - The top two went toe to toe at Inkersall Road and the visitors took the lead when Shepherd was allowed time and space to shoot from close range. They doubled that lead when stand in 'keeper Ian Conroy watched the ball over the bar only for it to drop behind him into the goal, and went three up when Steve Shipp failed to clear a long punt upfield.

The scores were made respectable by the end after Steve Shipp made amends by scoring a penalty won by Paul Nicholls and Steve Botchetts ferocious volley at the far post, but unfortunately Rovers took a huge step towards the title with their 2-3 win.

April

1st v Hepthorne Lane (A) (Chesterfield FA - Senior Cup qf) - An interesting little competition which brings together the Saturday and Sunday champions from the previous season.

Despite the big build up both sides could only serve up a turgid 0-0 draw, and required a replay.

5th v Doe Lea (A) - The two sides at the top of the league were doing their level best to NOT win it, both Brampton Rovers and Staveley ended the day with draws Paul Nicholls netted for Staveley who let in a last minute equaliser in their 1-1 draw, whilst Rovers drew 0-0.

7th v Hepthorne Lane (A) - Staveley drew a blank once again against their cup opponents but still managed to take home a point as the home side failed to score also.

Thats 180 minutes in league and cup in the same week and no goals. Brampton Rovers lost though.

12th v Killamarsh WE (A) - Andy Knowles and Steve Botchett secured more valuable points with the goals in a 1-2 win.

14th April v  KSPO (A) - A 2-0 defeat inflicted by Ady Wells and Chris Dickens of the Staveley Saturday side! put another huge dent in any title hopes.

19th v Killamarsh WE (H) -  Staveley kept their faint title hopes alive with a 4-1 win thanks to another John Stacey double and one each from Paul Nicholls and Darren Evans, but the
up and down form of both Brampton Rovers and Staveley in the recent games had let in Grassmoor WMC and it was the men from Barnes Park who now led the way.

21st v Wingerworth (H) - Needing to win both of the last two games to stand any chance of landing the league title at the end of the season Staveley fell at the first with another 0-0 draw.

23rd v Hepthorne Lane (A) (CFASCqfr)  - April's mini series against the men from North Wingfield (who at the time of writing in 2015 are still in operation) came to an end with a 1-3 victory and a place in the semi finals courtesy of John Staceys sixth two goal haul of the season and Steve Botchett.

26th v Grassmoor WMC (H) - Already crowned Champions Grassmoor  ended the league season in style beating Staveley 0-3.

So the league season which at one stage promised so much ended in disappointment, there was still the Chesterfield FA Senior Cup to play for though...

30th v Industry (H) CFASCsf) - Peter Kenworthy put Staveley into the lead after just 2 minutes but  second division Industry stormed back and were 1-2 up after 10 minutes. Mick Waller and Richie Jolley with the goals.

The game then turned on its head for a second time as John Stacey and a header from Andy Marples put Staveley back into the lead 5 minutes into the second half and thats how it stayed...for about a minute, when Keith Hunt made it 3-3.

There was to be no "giant killing" however as Gary Bagshaw scored after beating three defenders and John Stacey crashed one in off the crossbar late on to book Staveleys place in the final. 5-3

MAY

12th v Brampton Rovers (CFASC Final!!!!) - the cup brings together the Saturday and Sunday Champions from the previous season, Rovers qualified as 1990/1991 Chesterfield Sunday League Division One Champions and Staveley as current holders of this trophy.

in the league meetings between the two teams only goal difference would separate them given Staveleys 2-0 win in September and Bramptons 3-2 win in March, and as expected the final was evenly contested with both sides showing why they were in contention for this seasons Division One title until being pipped at the death by Grassmoor.

Staveley had the slight advantage of the game being played at their home ground of Inkersall road but it was Brampton who created the better chances in the first half. Tony Rawson, goal scoring hero in the semi final saw his goal bound effort cleared off the line by Gary Bagshaw and Tim Harrison forced a fine save from stand in keeper Ian Conroy. Steve Botchett had the pick of Stavely chances but saw Simon Harrison, at full stretch keep out his fierce drive.

Botchett wasn't to be denied however and just 50 seconds into the second half he planted a Paul Brodie cross past Harrison with his head

Staveley MW 1 - 0 Brampton Rovers

Rover we're clearly shellshocked and just two minutes later Paul Nicholls' electric pace took him into the box where with a defender still in close attention he checked, swivelled and drilled the ball into the net...

Staveley MW 2 - 0 Brampton Rovers

it very nearly got got better as man of the match Paul Brodie fed Steve Botchett again only this time the prolific Botchett miscued with only the keeper to beat, and following a brave save from Simon Harrison at the feet of Paul Nicholls, the rebound fell to Paul Brodie who fired towards goal but saw his attempt cannon off a defender with the keeper stranded.

Shaken into action Brampton mounted a series of attacks, Kevin Lee shot over and nobody could apply a finish to a Tim Harrison effort which flashed across goal. However on 77 minutes they got their reward, Tim Harrison again provided the assist to which Simon Shepherd stunningly volleyed past a helpless Ian Conroy.

Staveley MW 2 - 1 Brampton Rovers

It was to little to late though as Staveley hung on to claim the trophy...for the third successive season!
