Inter league games 1984 / 1985

During the 1984 / 1985 Woodleigh Chesterfield Sunday League there was an interesting side competition going on between all the Sunday Leagues from around the country featuring the best players from around those leagues.."all star  teams" if you like....

The first of those was held on September 13th 1984 but was, strangely the final of the previous seasons Midland Sunday Cup and was held at Worksop Towns Central Avenue ground....

Chesterfield Sunday League who had beaten: Long Eaton Sunday League 1-0 in Round 1, Potteries and District 2-1 in Round 2 and Nottinghamshire 2-0 in round 3...

...played

Sheffield and District Sunday League who had beaten Redmayne 0-1 in round 1, Derby CFA 2-0 in Round 2 and Leicester and District 0-1 in round 3.

Unfortunately for the Chesterfield Sunday League they endured a miserable first half and were  4-0 down before Ray Hill of Staveley and Phil Blake of CSPO gave the score a bit of respectability. the game eventually finished Chesterfield 2 - 5 Sheffield.

the line up above is notable for the fact that, G.Weighill, P.Greaves, S Quigley and D.Pugh would all make appearances for Staveley Miner Welfares Saturday and Sunday teams in the future.

The 1984 / 1985 competition started soon afterwards

Ray Hill gave Chesterfield a dream start when after just five minutes he put them ahead, they extended that lead when Cosimo DeGirolamo hit a tremendous long range shot after half an hour, but Leicester fought back to level the score and took the tie into extra time, where no further goals were scored and so the two sides must met again for a replay.

Round 1 Replay v Leicester (A) - December

Manager Terry Blunt rang the changes for that replay and it paid dividends in the end, however it was Leicester that scored first when Chris Hill smacked the ball home in the 47th minute.  CSPO fullback, Mally Ryan  then equalised heading in Cosimo De-Girolamos cross. Only for Leicester to go back in front four minutes later.

Darren Vernon equalised after a good run from Staveleys Ray Hill to take the tie into yet another period of extra time.

Chesterfield made all the running during the extra 30 minutes and went ahead through a Ray Hill penalty after a defender had stopped a goal bound effort with his hand.

After that it was all one way traffic and Chesterfield progressed 5-3 thanks to the brilliance of Phil Greaves who set up 2 further goals for hattrick hero Darren Vernon.

Stoke twice lead the match but first Cosimo DeGirolamo equalised on 65 minutes and Ray Hill of SMWFC took the game into extra time with a fine solo effort a minute from time.

In extra time Darren Vernon showed the skills that would eventually lead him to the Staveley Miners Welfare Saturday team when he sealed the game and a semi final place for Chesterfield by crashing home an unstoppable 30 yard drive 10 minutes in.

The preview in the paper was a little bit naughty from the previous game as it carried the headline "Vernon Books Final Spot" it was of course the SEMI final that Darren Vernons hattrick had booked a place in and sadly thats where the Woodleigh Chesterfield Sunday Leagues bid for a second successive final ended.

Tucked away in a pokey little corner of the sports report the paper read -

"The league's Midland Inter-league cup ended in disappointing fashion at Inkersall Road - home of SMWFC  when highly fancied Potteries Sunday League beat the Chesterfield league 0-4. All the goals were scored in the second half"

Well I'm proud of you lads even if the paper isn't.
