First Team: Match Preview - Retford, Pickering and France?

The last game saw Staveley Miners Welfare exit the Sheffield Senior Cup at the hands of Rossington Main who play in the division below us, we played some good stuff and had the lions share of the possession but just couldn't get the ball in the net, which happens sometimes.

This game was preceded by a sensational performance in the League against leaders Tadcaster Albion resulting in a 2-1 victory and, its that form  / desire that the team will need to take into the next few games....

Firstly away at Retford, who despite being down near the bottom will still be a tough proposition and Pickering Town again away who are always in the mix and currently sit just 3 points below us, so it should be a great game to watch between two evenly match sides.

Sadly I won’t be at either match (first I've  missed since 16/04/2013 – curiously enough that was away at Pickering Town)

"Welfare Bear" at last seasons game  away at Pickering

The reason being is I'm off to France to do a sponsored  60 mile walk in aid of ABF the Soldiers Charity and commemorate the 100 year anniversary of world War one.

Now I won't bore you too much by repeating the same things (if you really want to read what it’s all about click here). Save as to say I'm doing this in remembrance of my Great-Great Granddad Charles Edward Askew who was an anti Aircraft Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery,

My Great Granddad Joseph Ellenbogen a Russian immigrant who served in the 9th Russian Labour Battalion and of course the men of our Parish.

I have received some further info regarding the itinerary and I thought I’d share it with you seeing as though many of you good kind supporters of Staveley Miners Welfare have sponsored me…

Day 1 - 15th October - Meet in London then transfer to Arras.

Day 2 - 16th October - Start the walk at the Lochnagar Crater finishing at Ficheux - along the walk we'll pass many memorials and of particular Staveley relevance today is Thiepval as Joseph Benison, Edgar Bennett, Albert Edward Brearly, John Churm, William Dutton, John William Gillings, Harold Hardy, John William Milner, John Thomas Oakley, William Vardy, Joseph Walsh and Samuel Woodhouse are remembered here.

The route also passes Ancre - British, where Leonard Hasman is buried (sadly his nephew also called Leonard met his end in the second World war and is also on the Staveley memorial)

Day 3 - 17th - Starts at La Targette British Cemetery and ends at Neuve-Chapelle.

I suspect this will be harder than the first day, I've done the high peak challenge four times before which is a 17 mile walk from Hurdlow to Cromford and believe me its hard to walk to the car afterwards nevermind do another 20 miles the day after!!!

Day 4 - 18th - Steenwreck to Ypres - the final day ends at the Menin Gate where...Wilfred WalkerJoseph Wale, Harry Strawther, Aaron Shooter, William Rimmington, William Hunt, Ronald Houston, Thomas H Childs, Charles Edward Bowler,Ernerst Baguley, Frank Herbert Alton, are remembered.

Day 5 19th - back to London then Staveley - just in time for the away trip to Barton Town Old Boys!!!

Massive thanks to all those that have sponsored me so far, don't worry though if you haven't yet as there is still plenty of time to do so....

by texting STEH66 £(amount in numbers) to 70070, or by giving it to me at a game.

Up the Welfare!
